Red Chris is an open-pit copper-gold mine in the famous Golden Triangle of northern British Columbia, situated on the traditional territory of the Tahltan Nation. As a fly-in, fly-out operation, Red Chris is reached via charter flights from multiple locations in BC and Alberta, with teams working on a rotational schedule. Currently an active open-pit producer, Red Chris is poised for an exciting transformation – we are developing a high-value underground block cave that will extend the mine’s life for decades and unlock even more resources. Your Impact

• Perform line boring, bore welding, and bore restoration on heavy mining equipment and related components using the Climax BB5000.
• Perform machining, welding, cutting, gouging, fitting, and fabrication work on mobile and fixed equipment.
• Complete structural and mechanical welding repairs using appropriate welding processes and procedures.
• Perform repairs and modifications on CAT 793 haul trucks, CAT Graders, CAT D10 dozers, P&H 2800, Hitachi 3600 and PC7000 shovels.
• Repair and rebuild equipment components such as bores, buckets, truck bodies, blades, structures, frames, brackets, pins, bushings, and attachments.
• Interpret engineered drawings, blueprints, welding specifications, measurements, and repair instructions.
• Inspect damaged or worn components and assist in determining suitable repair methods.
• Accurately measure components using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and dial indicators.
• Complete field repairs in the open pit, maintenance shop, and other operational areas.
• Work safely around large mobile equipment and understand the hazards associated with stored energy, suspended loads, equipment articulation, and raised attachments.
• Document completed work, repair details, measurements, labour hours, and follow-up requirements in SAP or other site systems.
• Create notifications for additional defects or repair requirements identified during the work.
• Maintain welding machines, machining equipment, line-boring equipment, tools, and work areas in safe operating condition.
• Follow site isolation, lockout, hot-work, confined-space, lifting, and working-at-height requirements.
• Participate in pre-job planning, field-level risk assessments, toolbox meetings, and workplace inspections.
• Work collaboratively with the maintenance team to minimize equipment downtime and support production requirements.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned.

As Part of the Team

The Machinist is responsible for safely performing machining, welding, fabrication, line boring, and repair work in support of mobile and fixed-plant maintenance activities at Red Chris Mine.

The position supports a large mining fleet that includes CAT 793 haul trucks, CAT Graders, CAT D10 dozers, P&H 2800, Hitachi 3600, and Komatsu PC7000 shovels.

This position works closely with maintenance supervisors, planners, tradespeople, operations personnel, and contractors to complete high-quality repairs that improve equipment safety, reliability, and availability.

The Machinist is expected to demonstrate visible safety leadership, identify and control workplace hazards, follow established procedures, and stop work when conditions are unsafe. All work must be completed in a manner that protects employees, equipment, the environment, and the operation.

Prerequisites

• A valid Journeyperson Machinist certification or equivalent recognized trade qualification is required.
• Interprovincial Red Seal endorsement is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet site-access requirements.
• A minimum of three to five years of welding experience is required.
• Welder certification is considered a strong asset.
• Previous experience in mining, heavy construction, industrial maintenance, or a similar heavy-equipment environment is preferred.
• Experience repairing large mobile mining equipment and fixed-plant components is considered an asset.
• Experience working on CAT 793 haul trucks, CAT motor graders, CAT D10 dozers, P&H 2800 shovels, Hitachi EX3600 shovels, or PC7000 shovels is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated experience with precision machining, fabrication, structural welding, and heavy-equipment component repair.
• Line-boring, bore-welding, and bore-restoration experience is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, material selection, heat control, and distortion management.
• Ability to use computerized maintenance systems such as SAP is considered an asset.
